October 2010

Welcome to Fall.
There comes a time in every mother's life when she respects her daughter's opinions...or regrets them. Too late now.
Most of you, on this list, are aware that I have sewn my clothes for decades. Oooh that word sounds old. Okay, how about I have sewn my clothes for many, many years. I felt it was time to go through my closet. My purpose was to give away garments that I didn't like anymore, I considered outdated or I no longer could fit (I won't comment on that one).
I asked Simi to be the judge on what I should keep. BIG mistake! My husband watched with interest. As I tried on one outfit after another, her responses were: Mom, c'mon; nope; all your clothes look the same; that's gotta go; you look like a college professor (I liked my college professors) or she shrugged. My husband just pointed his thumb to the hall where the heap was growing.

I thought to myself, "Hey, I just made that yellow dress and it has pockets too!" I was calculating how much I could get that red polka-dot dress on the black market, or that striped skirt and coordinated tan jacket. Does anybody know how I cute I looked in that? Guess not. In less than thirty minutes, the hours, days, and weeks I spent tucked away in the basement, creating masterpieces from Vogue Advance Designer patterns were gone. Nooooooooooooo. Next, went the shoes--some I never wore; sweaters, and for good measure, I tossed my two wigs--I looked like Halle Berry in one of them. Sigh. My hair will never be black again. Gray seems to be dye-resisted.
Shhh, don't tell Simi, but I had to pull a skirt out of the stack. I needed something to wear for Bible class.
Oh well, I guess I have to go shopping for more fabric!

Have a happy October everyone.
Be blessed!

It's the Red Carpet event at the Cole Family reunion--yep, it the second Cole reunion I attended this summer.
Make sure you check out the photo of me with my little cousin Malik Clark. Who was that woman?
Either I looked twenty years younger or thirty years older, trying to look twenty years younger.
You be the judge and fire me off an email.

What Did you do during the summer?
Remember that question? Usually it was the first one teachers asked their students when returning to school. For example, if I was in Mrs. Parks's third grade classroom, I would have a mouthful. Here goes:

I visited several military bases, attended two conventions, three family reunions with a fourth one coming up this weekend. Inhale...exhale.
Three of those reunions were mine, but I have to give a shout out to the Chicago Croft Sturdivants reunion (Kerry's mother's side).
I'm always impressed when someone takes the time to research their roots. Kerry's cousin traced back six generations to the Twilight Planation in Tallahatchie, Mississippi. I AM SO JEALOUS.
So, of course I came home, counted my family tree, and doubt checked it again. Nope. So far, I have only gone back five generations. Check it out at my talkgenealogy.blogspot.com.

OH, big news during the summer: my baby turned 21...go Simi, go Simi...it's your birthday. In lieu of a surprise party, I had a surprise phone chain bash. Twenty-one people agreed to call her at designated times once they got the go ahead from the previous caller. It was hilarious! Simi is convinced at least a few callers forgot their numbers because two people said they were the ninth caller. Better planning when she turns twenty-one again. LOL. She got calls from as far away as New York, Miami, Houston, California, North Carolina....
